Day 17: What do you think is the most challenging issue in education today?
Boy that’s a hard one, when there are so many to choose from. Perhaps the one that I find the most challenging is teaching children to think for themselves and justifying their thinking. I think as teachers we are “spoon feeders” and we are looking for quick answers so we don’t always allow our students to think for themselves. We are teaching in busy classrooms, with expectations coming from every angle and I think that we tend to rush our students when it comes to “think time”. It’s okay to have a student sit there and think a bit and stretch their brain in order to give a good response. But we actually have to teach our students how to do that and we need to start younger.
